Life Balance and the Stay at Home Business

Starting your own business normally requires that the entrepreneur perform most of the functions of the business. This includes accounting, marketing, sales, inventory, purchasing, office, shipping, and any other task needing to be done. The business owner is motivated to succeed and will do "whatever it takes", even if it kills them. So, long hours over extended periods of time may result. This affects all areas of life including family, spouse, and friend relationships as well as the amount of time spent on relaxation activities like hobbies, quiet time, and vacations. At times it is only work, work, and more work. Over the long term this will be detrimental to the well being of the business and it's owner while necessary perhaps, over shorter periods of time.

Take sleep for example. Many processes necessary to health and well being take place during sleep. Sleep is essential to help maintain mood, consolidate learning and memory, and help mental and physical performance. Sleep plays a central role in the normal function of the endocrine system, which is instrumental in regulating metabolism, growth, development, tissue function, and also plays a part in determining mood. Sleep will also recharge your immune system. Lack of sleep can be a contributing factor to health problems such as obesity, diabetes, hypertension and depression.

Each time you lose an hour of sleep, that hour is added to your sleep debt. This "sleep debt" can only be reduced by getting extra sleep, but the effects of long term sleep deprivation may not be reversible. And long-term sleep deprivation leads to fatigue and lowered mental ability and then to problems handling stress, problem solving and decision making.

It is apparent that it is very important for the business owner to get enough sleep to avoid the serious consequences as listed above. It is not only sleep that is important though. Outside diversions, fun, rest and relaxation, and good relationships are integral parts of a balance that will lead to an individual's success. Time must be taken to "recharge our batteries" so to speak.

The creativeness required to run a business is only available to us when we are rested and in a good frame of mind. There are many forms of meditation that will help us achieve the ability so sit quietly and wait for an answer to a question. Or it may be a meditation that actively contemplates problems and solutions. But we still need to take the time to do that rather than always logic. When we use what we already know to guide us, results are likely to be mediocre. What we really want is to be inspired and that requires that we get out into new situations and experiences.

This inspiration usually come when we least expect it. For example, we may be wondering why we cannot retain customers or attract word of mouth advertising. Then while playing golf an inspiration will come to us that like in golf, follow-through is important. Just like we need to finish our swing in golf, we need to finish the transaction with our customer. This could then lead to follow-up communications like saying "thank you", and the like. Golf also teaches us to keep our eye on the target or dream. This is an excellent example of the value of fun, rest & relaxation to the business owner and business.

Finally, many business owners have "providing well for their family" as a goal of their efforts. If the business owner doesn't take the time to spend with their family, they may not want to even share in any of the other successes.

Take care of yourself physically, emotionally, & spiritually and then you will be able to do anything, to have anything and to be anything.

Why is a Stay at Home Business Successful?

In one of his audio tapes, Bob Proctor discusses what he has found as the reason why some people succeed while others do not. Simply put he says that successful people do those things that failures don't do. In and of itself, that doesn't help very much. But he goes on to say that successful people have a dream that compels them to do whatever it takes. They are focused on the result rather than the means to the result. So they make the sales prospecting effort and when appropriate, they ask for the sale as a step towards realizing their dream, whereas the unsuccessful person will avoid these unpleasing tasks. So the dream is very important to successful people. The dream could be anything from financial freedom, to staying at home with the kids, to joining the professional golf tour but it must stir up passion. When the dream is the focus, then the means become necessary and therefore palatable. Proctor says that when the focus is on the pleasing result or dream, then people will undertake the not so pleasing means. If the focus is on pleasing processes instead, then a pleasing result is highly unlikely.

Efficacy is the ability to create a result. As a result follows every action, the key is to perform the right action to realize the desired outcome. Self-efficacy is the belief that one is capable of attaining certain goals. It is a belief that one has their capabilities to carry out the actions required to deal with circumstances or ability to reach a goal. If the individual has high self efficacy they will be more inclined to undertake the action believing that they will succeed. As individuals exercise control over their thoughts, feelings and actions it follows that they then control the result. It is important then that we avoid thought like "I can't do that" and instead think "How can I do this?". The answers will come and we can take each small step toward the goal until it is realized. With each of these successes we will become more and more confident and therefore more willing to step out of our comfort zone.

It is important then, that people feel that their goal is attainable. A good starting point is to do some research. Common sense says that if one other person has achieved that goal, then anyone will be able to achieve it. Attaining the goal will require action but first a plan is needed. Ideally, copying another person's actions should achieve similar results. This is not usually the case, even though moderate success will likely be achieved. What really needs to be duplicated is the successful persons' attitudes and overall strategy. This would include things like having a dream, believing in oneself, following a plan, massive action, and finally, doing the things that failures don't like to do. Many people are successful because their idea was new and the freshness of it attracted customers or followers. This new idea filled a need of other people that was in demand. So if we want to copy someone exactly, we may not be as successful. For example, a while back I found a pay-per-click location that cost me ten cents per click and I received lots of customers. When I go back there now though, because many other people have found this website the cost is higher and there are other competing products so my results are not that great anymore. So if someone were to copy me into that exact website, they would be disappointed. But if they copied me in discovering an underused website, they would have the success that I originally did.

To summarize, find a dream, what is it that really excites you? Do your research and set out a plan. Then it is important to focus on the end result while doing the steps laid out in your plan.

Good News for The Stay at Home Business

It seems that every time we turn around
there is another bad news story.

You have heard them:
- a recession is here or imminent,
- the sub-prime fallout,
- businesses closing,
- businesses downsizing,
- people losing their homes
- high price of energy & gasoline
- increasing unemployment... and so on.

These stories end to cause people to worry
about their own and their family's future. So
the voice in our head says things like:
- what will happen if I lose my job?
- will I be able to keep my house?
- how will I pay my energy bills?
- can I afford to put gas in my car?
- do I have the ability to take a vacation?
- how will I pay for my children's education?

Worrying about these things does not affect,
in any way, whether they will happen or not.

There is a solution though.
First, take the energy that is being put into
worrying and focus it on being grateful for
the things that you have now. Make a list
so that you can remind yourself that their is
good all around you.

Second, affirm that it is you and only you that
can take action to achieve what you want in life
beit good health, financial security or success,
a new job, or a healthy relationship... and then
decide to act.

Third, take the action that you need to take
even if you feel that things are not yet ready.
It is better to take imperfect action than no
action at all. If you make a mistake, then at
least you have also learned something.

Organize Your Stay at Home Business

Ever wondered how some people seem to be able to accomplish so much with so limited time? It doesn't seem fair, does it? We all get the same 24 hours. Why do they get more things done than most people do? And all the while, here you are burning yourself up trying to get things done and feeling more frustrated than fulfilled.

The trick here is proper time management. Being able to properly organize and schedule your activities will definitely improve your ability to beat deadlines and produce output. Here are a few tips on properly managing your time and your resources to increase you productivity.

Keep a Journal

Always keep a pen and some paper on hand. You may also use an organizer or even mobile devices to help you do so. This will allow you to jot down activities you are supposed to accomplish plus the resources, deadlines, and priorities for each project. This will help you remember and meet deadlines.

A journal also helps you budget your time. The cardinal sin for those seeking to accomplish much is to think that they have much time left. They push the start of work until they find themselves dangerously close to deadlines. Being able to start work on time and using your time meaningfully will do much to increasing your productivity.

Work Smarter, Not More

After receiving a project, you may be tempted to buckle down to work immediately. This may seem like a good thing; however, it could actually be counterproductive. The technique here is to work smarter by planning before you start. Planning may seem like a waste of time – until you realize that the time you spend twiddling with your pen, conceptualizing, and visualizing how your project should be executed is time well spent. With proper planning, completing your projects way ahead of time is definitely a possibility

Go over the work you have to do, and find ways to reduce redundant and repetitive tasks. This could reduce the time and cost of many of your tasks.

Make Time for Rest

Another trick that may seem counterintuitive is to make sure you have enough time for rest and recreation. Pulling one all-nighter should be okay, but pulling all-nighter after all-nighter will result in decreased productivity. Take frequent but short breaks to re-energize yourself.

Keep Healthy

You lose time when you get sick. Even if your illness will not sideline you from work, it will still affect your productivity and energy levels. Emphasis on health will make sense when you adopt the principle of quality instead of quantity. For example, 3 hours of work on optimum energy levels may be more productive than 6 hours of work on half a leg.

Get Organized

Set aside time to organize your stuff. You lose much time when you're going over the rubble of your equipment looking for lost and misplaced items.

Modularize

When you tackle a big problem head on, you are bound to get bruised. Break down the problem into manageable parts and tackle each part separately. The sense of fulfillment of being able to win little battles will spur you on to tackle other challenges. Moreover, being free from the clutter of having to consider the problem as a whole will prevent you from being overwhelmed by the task.

What About Affiliate Programs for the Stay at Home Business?

So, what is an affiliate and what does he or she do?

The affiliate marketer acts as a "middle man" between merchant and consumer, but without adding anything to the consumer's cost. Affiliates do not mark up or resell products. Instead, the affiliate educates and directs the consumer to a product, and they receive a percentage of the sale in commission from the merchant. The affiliate acts as an independent lead generator for the merchant by bringing in new customers.

This is a win-win situation for both the affiliate and the merchant. The affiliate can reap a full-time income marketing a whole suite of products that he does not own. They don't pay for product creation, don't have to ship anything and don't deal with customer service issues or returns. The merchant benefits from the influx of new customers, the boatloads of cheap traffic and low cost advertising. Merchants get their product and their brand in front of thousands of potential buyers without paying a dime until someone makes a purchase. It is truly a pay for performance arrangement. It's also one of the toughest types of business to earn a significant income from. Competition is fierce and almost 95% of affiliates earn little or no income.

For the lucky few, the ones that know how to do it the rewards can be amazing. This course has been created to help you become one of the few and to perform at the very highest levels of Affiliate Marketing . . .

CHOOSING AN AFFILIATE PROGRAM

Before you begin your venture into affiliate marketing, it is necessary to choose the right program for you. There are almost as many programs out there as there are products! When you first start out, it's easy to go overboard signing up to as many programs as possible, but this isn't the right way to go about it.

First, you need to decide on a area of particular interest to you. What products do you know the most about and think you could do the best job of promoting?

Once you identify your specialty, you begin by sorting through the available merchants and examine the structure of their affiliate programs.

Key areas to investigate:

1. When and how do you get paid?
Find out whether the program pays you weekly, bi-monthly, monthly, etc. Most programs have a minimum payout amount, meaning that you don't receive your commissions until hitting a minimum number of sales for the pay period. You'll also want to find out whether the programs pays you via cheque, direct deposit, PayPal or any combination of the three.

2. How much do you make per sale?
Remember, you'll be investing your own money into advertising and other expenses to promote these programs. Therefore, you should seek programs which reward their affiliates well. Many of the most popular affiliate programs out there pay their affiliates less than 10 percent commission, and therefore it is only the top 5 percent of their affiliates that are generating any serious income from these programs.

3. Is the program managed well? Is this a reputable company?
Larger companies usually have "affiliate managers" devoted to maintaining contact with their affiliates. Even if you go with a smaller outfit, they should at least offer clear contact information. You might want to try e-mailing them at their contact address to see how fast they respond to you. Mis-managed programs are, at best, a sign of disorganization and, at worst, could indicate a company in trouble. The last thing you want is to be sitting on hundreds of dollars worth of hard earned commissions and see the merchant go out of business before paying you.

Change Up & Enjoy your Home Business & Life More

Do you feel that your life is starting to stagnate into a boring routine? Well before you get depressed, break away from that cycle! Do something to get the adrenalin pounding through your veins again. The easiest way is to make simple changes, here's how:

Same end, different means - drive a different route, take a walk during lunch time instead of going to war with your paperwork again, read suspense novels instead of your usual genre, etc. The end result may be the same but doing it another way opens up a new pathway of experience that you may find surprisingly refreshing. You might even find that this new way is better or even easier. Change one thing at a time until you're totally comfortable with it.

Scale down or up - When you put layers of clothing on, it will be impossible for you not to feel the added weight of the textile materials right? The same goes with your life. The more complicated it is the more you have to deal with: different people or situations. If you're too stressed with the amount of work that entails, scale down. Distribute your responsibilities, learn to delegate and be polite but firm in saying "no" to added work. Now, if you want to move up on the career ladder, start accepting more duties. Again, do only as much as you are able.

Change good habits for better ones - If you keep on slugging it out with the Stairmaster every time you go to the gym, sooner or later, you are going to get bored with it. Why not try Pilates or kickboxing or swimming to keep fit? There are a lot of ways to keep fit. Even running around keeping up with your kids' energy will reduce calories. Speaking of kids, if you take time to help them with schoolwork why don't you try getting them to join you in other worthwhile activities like sports or hobbies or even volunteer work. The life lessons you'll both learn will be priceless and the bonding time that will come about is an added bonus too.

A change of scenery - Sometimes a simple flower arrangement or a funny cartoon can make a dreary office more cheerful. The eye seeks out and immediately zones in on something that alters their usual image so if you add on a little splash of color to what it usually sees, you'll definitely get a reaction. Pleasant or not, that change breaks the routine.

Simple changes to simple things make life more enjoyable.

Home Business Income Taxes and Interest

For financial planning purposes, there are two kinds of debt; good debt, and bad debt. When money is borrowed with the purpose of earning income and the interest is tax deductible this is good debt. Borrowing money to pay for purchases such as vacations, vehicles, recreational items where the interest is not tax deductible is bad debt. Please note that this is a discussion on good debt versus bad debt and not on the appropriateness of any particular investment or purchase.

In our accounting business, I had a client very pleased that the $100,000 debt he incurred to purchase his business was paid off. On the surface, this may be a good thing, but in the background were over $60,000 of outstanding personal loans for a recreational vehicles. The $4,200 (at a 7% interest rate) interest that this individual will continue to pay on his personal loans is not tax deductible. If he had paid off his personal loans and had $60,000 remaining on his business debt, the $4,200 would have been tax deductible. Assuming a marginal tax rate is 25%, the tax savings would have been $1,050! This tax savings could then be used in any way the individual sees fit.

A similar situation would exist where a person was investing in real estate, the stock market, or other types of passive income potential. It is a better tax and wealth building strategy to use whatever funds are available to pay off personal debt where the interest is not tax deductible. Then you can borrow money for the investment you were going to make anyway and then be able to use the interest expense as a deduction from your income. The tax savings to you can be substantial.

Your banker should have no problem with what you are doing and many are likely doing this sort of arrangement themselves already. For tax write off purposes, it doesn't matter what the loan collateral is, it does matter what the actual item purchased is. So if you put up your personal debt-free car as collateral, the interest can still be deductible if used for appropriate business or other investments.

As we can see from this example, it is important to consider the tax consequences of our debt related decisions. Simply put, personal debt where the interest is not tax deductible should be paid off first. Then, a decision to pay off business or investment debt must include consideration for alternate uses of the money. This can only be done on an individualized basis and a financial advisor or accountant should be brought into your team.
