1. It's the law. Many states, including California and New York have made it straight up illegal to drive while using your phone's handset. Thus, what was once considered a luxury (or even a way to "look cool") has now become a requirement for anyone who wants to use a cell phone while driving.

2. It's not that expensive. Initially, many people were scared off by the potentially high price of Bluetooth handsets and those from other major brands. The good news in 2009 is that there are a number of lower-priced options for those who need to comply with the law but don't have a lot of money to spend. 3. Make sure to sync it up. When you get you new hands-free unit out of the box, you're going to want to give it a spin right away. Recent studies of traffic accidents and fatalities have found that although using a hands-free device lowers the chance of a crash, the only way to really put the odds in your favor is NOT to make any calls while driving whatsoever. If you have an emergency call to make, find a safe place to pull off the road first.
