Setting Up An Internet Business: Your Most Important Decision

When setting up an Internet business, there is one decision above all that you must get right. Get it wrong and you could find yourself working like a slave in a job you hate; but get it right and you can enjoy all the freedom and rewards that you are hoping for. Think about this one very carefully...

THINK CAREFULLY: WHAT KIND OF BUSINESS?

There are many types of business you can start and operate online, but it's a mistake to rush into any without properly considering its potential and also whether it will suit your preferred lifestyle.

For example, becoming an affiliate and selling other people's product is a quick and fairly easy way to start on the Internet, but you wouldn't be building your own business. You'd be building the product owner's business instead, and you'd be dependent on them and vulnerable to any changes at their end. It can also be very competitive.

Or take something like starting an eBay store -- how about the hours, and the pressure? That sort of operation can require you to keep fairly regular and strict routines week by week, keeping up with orders, shipping goods etc. All part of keeping customers happy and maintaining an excellent reputation and feedback score on eBay.

Many people could find that too restrictive, too pressured, and also too much like a 9-5 job.

WHAT SORT OF LIFESTYLE DO YOU WANT?

You see, the problem is, if you start building a business that boxes you in to time schedules or becomes too demanding, you will quickly lose motivation. It will become more like a chore and hard work -- not exactly what you were hoping for. And chances are, you won't stick with it long enough to succeed.

But the good news is that there are other opportunities that could be just right for you. Perhaps, as in the example of an eBay store, you don't mind the idea of a fairly strict and regular routine Monday to Friday. But if you dream of freedom and flexibility -- to work when you want, and take time off when you want -- then chances are you'll be a lot happier with something like a digital information product business.

WHAT WOULD YOUR IDEAL BUSINESS LOOK LIKE?

It's worth asking yourself this question, and writing down your answers. It will help to crystallize your thoughts and plans. And you should take your time over it; after all, choosing your ideal type of business has to be the biggest first step, and it can determine how successful and happy you will be.

But at a guess, your ideal business will be: one that is very profitable and easy to run ... and cheap and easy to set up ... and pays you an income for years to come.

And ideally, it will be a business that runs itself on auto-pilot so that you are free -- free to take time off whenever you wish and not have to keep attending to the business, or fixing this or changing that.

Imagine -- having a business of your own like that. It's as close as it gets to the Internet dream...
