Public Speaking - Who Should Prepare Your Speech?
By: Edward Hope

When you are starting out in public speaking or presenting to groups it is a good idea to fully write out your speech so that you see the flow of the speech from the opening to the final conclusion. Many aspiring speakers struggle getting their thoughts and ideas on paper. It is at this point that some speakers consider using a ghost-written or a "stock" speech

Regarding Ghost-Written Speeches

A good speech not only requires good language but also it must be personal. To discuss a subject effectively at a meeting or present to a group it is important to put yourself into your talk.

No-one likes to listen to a ghost-written speech read aloud without enthusiasm and interest. The speaker wastes their own time and their listeners' time.

If you haven't read through the speech before delivery, embarrassing moments can arise, like the mayor who read a speech that he said contained one of his favorite stories. It turned out he had never heard the story before, and he laughed so hard his glasses fell off and broke and couldn't continue with the rest of the speech.

Many individuals are good writers and full of great words. But a good speech requires a thorough knowledge of the subject as well as superb language. If the ghost-writer is not familiar with the subject they may resort to great sounding but empty platitudes to cover up that lack of knowledge

To overcome these issues you will need to choose a writer that:

1) You can have a one on one experience. This means working with them closely so you can communicate your feelings, experience and speech goals

2) Has a proven track record. You want to know what success they have had with other speakers.

3) You like them. This will help you communicate with them. You want to be able to communicate well with them.

4) You can agree a reasonable price that is affordable.

Regarding "Stock" Speeches

With the advent of the internet there are many sites offering "stock" speeches that you can use straight "off the shelf." These are useful when you are short of time or you are stuck and can't find the words to express yourself.

If you deliver a "stock" speech as it comes "off the shelf" you may find yourself embarrassed in the same way that a guest is when they realise they have worn the same dress as the First Lady to an event.

Before downloading the speeches check out samples of their speeches and the tools they provide to assist you in getting the best out of the speeches. Once you've checked them out and downloaded your speech, spend some time to prepare and practice you speech. It is important that you add your own stories and examples to the speech so your personality shines through.

Ghost-written and stock speeches are useful when you are struggling with time and/or what to say. But ensure you spend some time to put yourself and your knowledge into the speeches to improve their effectiveness in reaching your objectives.

However, the best route for truly effective public speaking and presenting to groups is to prepare and write the speech yourself. There are many resources on the web that can help you prepare and deliver your speech confidently and convincingly.
