Pen Gifts
By: Jack Ritchies

Pen gifts, in all their variations, have long been favorite advertising pen gifts, as virtually all organizations use them in one form or another.

Think of the stick pen, a cheap promotional pen that comes through the mail as part of a mailing package from one of the charities.

Or a ball point as given in conference welcome packs or trade show goody bags; or the advertising pens in the travel packs as part of an overseas trip and, of course, the gold engraved pens for a number of years loyal and faithful service...it used to be 50 years but now some companies are presenting them after only 5 years.

Just about the cheapest promotional printed pen is a stick pen, with or without a cap, and typically personalized in a single color by either screen-printing or foil blocking. Useful as part of a mailer but at the bottom end of advertising pens and quite often given away by the box to get into all levels of a company.

Further up the scale by fust a few pennies is the click pen i.e. a pen that has some sort of mechanism to allow the writing ball to retract when not in use. A dangerous item when the mechanism fails, especially if kept in the top pocket of a light-colored shirt or blouse.

The mid-range of the plastic gift pens is really competitive but a good marker is to decide if you want a throw-away pen or one with a propriety refill. This separates this particular cheap promotional pen sector into two groups with a consequent hefty variation in price.

Metal barrelled pens are more expensive but necessary if you want to give pens as engraved corporate gifts.

At this stage you are almost into the corporate branded gifts which includes the renowned Vector roller ball and Jotter ball pen from the Parker pen range.

After this, you just keep on going with the Parker branded gifts in the roller ball range.

Some of these are made of high impact ABS plastic and have a stainless steel trim, and others are stainless steel throughout, but both are high-quality writing instruments. The Parker range is complemented at the medium end by the Insignia and Rialto ranges.

Having decided to invest $20 plus for advertising pens you are in an entirely different a market, that includes many famous brand names such as Waterman, Cross, Quill, Sheaffer and for many the ultimate promotional gift, a mont blanc fountain pen.

Of these, Quill, not as well known as some of the other brand names, but renowned at home in the US for its quality and excellence. There is, of course, a wide choice and if the the budget is elastic a montblanc fountain pen will be a most acceptable personalized business gift.

Cross has a superb reputation for engineering and eminence with a timeless appeal to both men and women. The actual personalizatio should match the style and quality of the pen gift. After all, it would be short-sighted to use a printed pen as an expensive gift for, even excellent screen-printing will, eventually erode in the fullness of time.

And this is why most quality pen gifts are laser engraved or etched and, if done correctly will continue to be a superb example of promotional pen gifts.
