Are you satisfying the craving?
By: Chris Makell

"Careers", it's what many of us look forward to developing after high school or college. They are meant to tap into our existing talents, develop new ones and ultimately provide a satisfying way to make a living, i.e. money! So it's no secret that careers are both personal and powerful in how we live our lives.

Today people can spend an average of 12-16 hours on the job, working to grow their skills and contribute to their company's success. If you're spending that kind of time 5-6 days a week, when you do the math you find it's an inordinate amount of your life, devoted to your career. My point is, your career can have a major impact on who you are and how you live your life. Without a doubt, you want to create a career that delivers the best possible outcome to you. This includes financially, providing you with personal growth and preparing you for future opportunities. If it doesn't do that, it won't feel good and it won't give you the satisfaction you crave.

A number of career professional are at this juncture or crossing in their careers and they're not sure what their next move should or could be. They lament the current environment and how difficult it is to get or keep a job, so fear stops them. They are also unsure what would bring them the satisfaction they are entitled to.

Let's be clear, satisfaction is very important, not only to employees, but to employers as well. More dollars have been spent and invested in studies to prove the connection between an employee's satisfaction to a company's profitability. Employers, while also concerned about their business viability and success, are well aware they risk losing their best employees when (not if) the economy rebounds. It's not just your satisfaction - it's everyone's craving.

Rest assured you don't have to drop everything and make that move today. No matter where you are or what stage you're at, planning a career change or transition takes just that, planning. There are essential steps and actions that bring clarity and alignment with your desires and actions that deliver the results you want.

Where to start? Always best to start at the beginning - your true desire. The "what and why" of your desire will create the path to clarity around what would satisfy your craving. It may be that your true desire is to remain in your career path and transition to a higher level, a different company or a new way of working within your chosen profession. Or, it could be that your desire calls you to do something completely different - a true career change.

A craving is not satisfied with just the thought of satisfaction. It's only with actively feeding the desire that it's quenched. When you examine what your desire is and why you want it, then you begin the essential steps to 1.) Take control of your career and 2.) Create the career that gives you more satisfaction and a fulfilled life.

Oh yeah, and more money!
